Activists have smashed up a cardboard model of a Tesla cybertruck and chanted for Elon Musk to “go to hell” outside the Tesla headquarters in Sydney, joining protests across the world against the billionaire and his involvement in the Trump administration.

About 50 activists from NSW university groups and student representative councils camped outside the Tesla Sydney offices in Alexandria on Friday night with a giant “honk if you hate Elon” sign, staging one of the first protests in Australia against Musk.

Drivers on their commute home honked and pumped their fists in support of the protest, with one person yelling “f … Musk” as they sped past.

One motorist driving past accidentally crashed into the back of another vehicle, disrupting the protest as a tow-truck came to assess the damage.

A number of hecklers, including what appeared to be a local resident, came out booing and told the group to “go home”.

But the protesters continued with their chants and speeches, in which they slammed Musk’s role as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency or “DOGE” in US President Donald Trump’s administration.

On Friday, members of the protest group criticised Musk’s slashing of the US government workforce and his rise to billionaire status, with one activist claiming Tesla “represented the stolen wealth of Elon Musk”.

Protesters held up signs declaring “let them eat Tesla”, “f … Elon Musk and his little DOGE” and “the rat Musk go” as Tesla staff watched on from their desks only metres away.

University of NSW SRC welfare officer Brendan Tate, who has also been a vocal pro-Palestine activist, likened Trump and Musk’s actions to “fascism”.

University of Sydney student Jasmine Alrawi, who has also been a leading voice in the university pro-Palestine encampment, said Musk had “everything to do with us here in Australia”.

“Attacks against oppressed people, against workers, have everything to do with us here,” she said.

“The fact our government continues to defend Trump, and continues to defend Elon Musk is a huge shame.”

Materials promoting the action were circulated on social media before the event, calling for people to join the “Tesla Takedown” against the “Nazi saluting fascist” – referring to Musk’s apparent use of the Sieg Heil at the Trump inauguration earlier this year.

It comes as anti-Musk protests are staged in major cities across the world, including the Tesla Takedown movement, with some groups seeking out and destroying Tesla vehicles.

Tesla sales have also plummeted in Australia according to figures released by the Electric Vehicle Council this month, which revealed sales fell by 53 per cent in March and are down by almost 60 per cent for the first three months of 2025.
