Would-be prime minister Anthony Albanese has brought out the personal big guns, revealing his love story for the first time with partner Jodie Haydon.
The tell-all comes a week after Prime Minister Scott Morrison and wife Jenny’s at-home interview with Nine's 60 Minutes, in the clearest sign yet that Aussies are hurtling towards the election.
In a shoot for The Australian Women’s Weekly, Ms Haydon talks about when she realised she was in love with Albo, and also speaks of her shock at a life-threatening car accident that put him in hospital.
“I got the phone call and drove immediately to the scene. I saw the mess of a car before I saw him and thought, ‘he couldn’t survive this’,” she said.
In January last year Mr Albanese was crushed in his car just a few blocks from his Marrickville home.
“It was very scary, and in that moment, you realise just how much you love this person – the fear of losing them,” Ms Haydon said.
“As I jumped in the ambulance and saw Anthony, I knew then the depth of my feelings towards him.”
In the revealing interview, Ms Haydon also talks about growing up on the Central Coast and her relationship with her grandmother, and Mr Albanese talks about connecting with his father Carlo and finding a new family in Italy after being raised by a single mother in Camperdown.
Posing for pictures in their Marrickville home, Ms Haydon and Mr Albanese also reveal the moment they met at an event in Melbourne.
When giving a speech, Mr Albanese asked if there were any South Sydney Rabbitohs supporters in the room and was met with a loud and proud “up the Rabbitohs” by Ms Haydon.
Later, he introduced himself and learned that they not only had a football team in common, but that Jodie lived in his electorate.
The full interview will run exclusively in The Australian Women’s Weekly March issue, on sale this Thursday.
