Amanda Young: Jirsch liquidator charged over alleged theft of $238k

A prominent Sydney liquidator will face court in September after businesses told police they were fleeced of close to a quarter of a million dollars while she was tasked with saving them from the brink of collapse.

A Sydney liquidator tasked with turning around the fortunes of failing businesses has been charged with series of alleged rip offs to the tune of $240,000.

Former Jirsch Sutherland employee Amanda Young will front court in September on three counts of using her position to gain a financial advantage after a three year probe by the financial regulator and NSW Police.

St Gregory’s Armenian School in Rouse Hill is alleged by police to be the biggest victim of the theft after more than $100,000 allegedly went missing from its accounts.

Police allege she deposited three cheques into her account from the embattled school totalling $165,362.

The school, which was founded in 1970 in Cabramatta, was eventually sold for $7 million not long after it went into liquidation but is still subject of Supreme Court civil action from two brothers initially behind its birth.

Daniel and Michael Ghougassian have been locked in a legal logjam for years in their bid to recoup a $1 million loan from St Gregory’s.

Young, from Lewisham, was sacked in 2018 by Jirsch soon after the alleged financial discrepancies came to light and has since taken her former employer to the Fair Work Commission.

Police will further allege that between December 2017 and 2018 an additional three more businesses on the brink of going under also had $73,140 transferred into the accounts of Young.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission last month cancelled her registration as a liquidator after a committee found she improperly used her position and falsified books.

After years of probing the actions of Young NSW Police charged her last month with offences that carry a maximum penalty, if convicted, of 10 years in jail.

She will front the Downing Centre Local Court on September 8.
