Thousands of seats have already been removed, the turf is being uprooted and the giant screens behind the goalposts are being dismantled at the Moore Park sporting facility.
Developer Lendlease is in the process of preparing the site for the bulldozers, which will arrive as soon as the Australia v India cricket Test match finishes at the SCG next door.
SCG Trust chairman Tony Shepherd said he was “very pleased” with the progress being made.
“We will return NSW to the position where it has the best stadium facilities in Australia, and as the leading city in Australia that is more than appropriate,” he told The Saturday Telegraph.
“The old Sydney Football Stadium had past its use by date in terms of safety, and patron convenience and comfort, and it was due to be replaced and the new one will last for a long time.”
The stadium, built in the late 1980s, is being knocked down by the Berejiklian government and will be reconfigured into a modern, rectangular stadium at a cost of $730 million.
The project is expected to create more than 600 construction jobs and support around 300 jobs once operational in early 2022.
