A MOTHER, her son and a friend have appeared in court after a young university student was killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident.
Yang Hao, 20, was crossing Lachlan Street in Waterloo on Thursday afternoon when a car hit her.
While bystanders rushed to her aid, the alleged driver — Wollongong plumber Scott Hoskins — drove away.
On Friday morning, police arrested Hoskins’ mother, Debbra Hoskins, in Dapto.
It is alleged Mrs Hoskins, 50, attempted to take the blame for her son and claimed she was behind the wheel of the Kia Rio hatchback involved in the hit and run.
However, police didn’t believe her and later charged her with hindering police, making a false statement and intending to pervert the course of justice.
A few hours later, 21-year-old Hoskins turned up to Wollongong Police Station and was arrested.
He was charged with five offences including dangerous driving causing death.
Hoskins’ friend, Ashley Killorn, 21, was arrested on Friday night.
Police allege he was a passenger in the car when it hit Ms Hao.
He was charged with concealing a serious indictable offence.
Killorn and Hoskins were refused bail in Wollongong Local Court today and the cases were adjourned to Monday.
Mrs Hoskins was granted bail and the case adjourned to September 19.
Police have been told by witnesses that Ms Hao, who lived alone in an apartment nearby, was looking at her phone moments before she was hit.
She was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital where she died during surgery.
Residents of Lachlan St said accidents were common along the road, which had no pedestrian crossings or speed limit signs.
“There have been four pedestrians hit in the nine years I’ve worked here,” a local building manager said.
