A DRINK-driving policeman allegedly almost three times over the legal limit while unlicensed and behind the wheel of a cop car is still employed at his local station.

Senior-Constable Craig Andrew Sear, 41, was placed on “restricted duties” after he allegedly recorded a breath test reading of 0.138 in March.

Sen-Const. Sear was charged with mid-range drink driving and with having a licence that had been expired for less than two years.

He was stopped while driving an unmarked police car along Kinghorne St in Nowra after attending a detectives training course in Hurstville.

After he returned a positive reading it was then discovered that his driver’s licence had expired in February.

The allegations come just eight months after The Daily Telegraph revealed an internal investigation had been launched after a senior NSW detective who was arrested for alleged drink-driving was found to have not held a driver’s licence for more than 20 years.

At the time NSW Police confirmed their investigation would look at tightening department protocols that monitor police officers’ licences, given it was compulsory for police to have a current licence to be a member of the force.

Sanctuary Point resident Sen-Const. Sear was not present when his case was mentioned at Nowra Local Court yesterday. The matter was adjourned to May 3.

The Daily Telegraph has confirmed Sear continues to work for the Shoalhaven local area command, but on “restricted duties”. Facts tendered to court showed Sen-Const. Sear attended a serious traffic offenders program on Saturday.

He joined the police force eight years ago after a career as a firefighter and in the navy.

When profiled in his local newspaper upon receiving his badge, Sear said his brother was a detective, his father was a coroner and his father-in-law was a detective sergeant.
