‘A month long dedication to the queen herself’: Cafe co-owner plans ‘Taylor Takeover’

Taylor Swift trivia, food, and friendship bracelets: A cafe in Sydney’s inner-west will dedicate all of February to Taylor Swift ahead of her Aussie shows.

One cafe is pulling out all the stops for Taylor Swift ahead of her Australian tour, transforming itself into a shrine for the Swifties.

Phillip Salhab and his business partner Adrian Pizzolato have begun transforming their Five Dock cafe, Appetite Cafe, by putting up posters of Swift and encouraging customers to make friendship bracelets with their coffee.

Calling Mr Salhab a fan of Swift is an “understatement”.

Being one of the lucky few to score tickets to her concerts, Mr Salhab said he wanted to give the Swiftie community another chance to celebrate the megastar’s arrival – particularly for those who may have missed out on tickets.

“So the idea was born, a month-long dedication to the queen herself,” he said.

Swift-themed food – including chicken tenders, a rumoured favourite of Swift’s – trivia and sip and sketches will take over the Appetite Cafe, with a soundtrack filled with her discography.

A cat adoption day is also on the cards, honouring Swift’s love of cats, while also trying to do some good by finding them homes.

“She would be down for that. She’d be inspired by that,” Mr Salhab said.

For those who don’t like her music, Mr Salhab said that there are plenty of other cafes to try.

“I have to say that I feel bad for those who don’t like it, but I like to think that I am educating those who aren’t necessarily Swifties,” he said.

He added he’d been a Swiftie for almost 10 years.

“I very quickly fell into the rabbit hole, and I just wasn’t able to get out,” he said.

“I soon realised that it’s actually not just the music. I refer to her as the modern day Shakespeare. The way that she’s able to put words together – we’ve all got the access to the same dictionary, to the same words – but yet she has this craft, she’s able to just blend and merge these words that just pull the heartstrings, and I was just captivated by what she does.”
