2022 Sydney Royal Easter Show guide: Rides, food, entertainment and more

The 2022 Sydney Royal Easter Show boasts an entertainment program full of must-see events, rides and showbags as the agricultural society celebrates its 200-year anniversary.

Princess Anne to open Royal Easter Show

They might be great excuses to spend endless hours at the showground this Easter, but showbags and dagwood dogs aren’t the only reasons to visit the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

As well as all the usual food and animal displays, this year’s Show boasts an entertainment program full of must-see events such as flying motorcycles, a meet and greet with Peppa Pig, and a tribute to the Show’s past in the form of a special parade to celebrate 200 years of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW.

Taking over Parramatta Rd, the never-before-seen parade will feature 16 horses plus wagons and tractors, in a spectacular journey that will ceremoniously link the Show’s past with its present and future on April 9.

“To commemorate our heritage, the Show will once again bring visitors 12 hours of free entertainment, fun and education; connecting families with agriculture and reflecting on the history through new entertainment acts, agricultural parades and even an arts and crafts section with a 200-year novelty cake section,” the Show’s general manager Murray Wilton said.

“From old-fashioned contortionists to the iconic district exhibits, which will be joining forces for the first time since 1988 to create one display that tells the story of the RAS from 1822 to the modern day, the Show will be a place to come together as a community and make long-lasting memories with family and friends.”

A new addition is the Carnival Fun Pass which will replace paper carnival coupons.

“This will allow guests to load credits to an Opal-style card via our Carnival Fun Pass app to tap and play their way around the carnival rides and amusements,” Mr Wilton said.

“Tickets to the Show will be sold online to ensure we maintain our 80,000 daily attendance capacity.”

There’ll be new rides at the carnival, including the Twister and Aviator, and the return of popular favourites like the nightly fireworks and Murray Wilkinson and his working dogs.

Also on offer will be agricultural competitions and displays, the much-loved Farmyard Nursery and mouth-watering delights such as garlic bread on a stick.

The Show will continue to operate strictly within NSW Health guidelines to ensure it is compliant with all COVIDSafe recommendations.

NSW Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said the Show was an iconic event enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.

“I encourage everyone to get out to the Royal Easter Show, buy some showbags, jump on the rides and join in the fun of the largest agricultural event in the Southern Hemisphere,” Mr Ayres said.

Showgoers are encouraged to visit the Easter Show website to plan ahead and book online.

“They are one of the fastest dogs on earth, evolving into a racing dog and now are fast becoming the pet dog of choice for many Australian families, couples and singles,” said Dr Alicia Fuller, general manager of Greyhounds As Pets NSW.

“Many of our greyhounds have been successfully placed in small dwellings without a yard.”

Last year, GAPNSW rehomed more dogs than in its entire 13-year history.

“The cost of adopting a greyhound from GAPNSW is affordable for such a regal dog,” Dr Fuller said. “Adoption costs are $250, with everything your new furry family member will need.”

If you’re thinking about adopting a greyhound, the Greyhounds As Pets team will answer any questions in the Pet Pavilion every day of the Show. Visit gapnsw.com.au.

FOOD

Let’s face it, the tastiest sensations at the Show are always served on a stick. Last year it was bacon. This year, showgoers will be even more tempted.

“Food on sticks has been a big feature this year ... we have garlic bread on a stick, soft-shell crab on a stick, and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) on a stick,” the Show’s manager of operations and product development, Shane McGrath, said.

But the real hero of the Show is the dagwood dog, and now the taste sensation is even bigger than ever.

“No longer happy with a regular dagwood dog, we are serving two together,” Mr McGrath said.
