Massive haul of Kava sniffed out by drug dogs

Police have seized a massive haul of kava destined for a remote Arnhem Land community.

Drug and Organised Crime Detectives on Tuesday screened boxes being sent to Galiwinku on Elcho Island, discovering 122kg of the drug when drug detection dogs Raffa and Faye reacted to the cargo.

A search of the alleged offender, his home and a storage container also allegedly revealed another 171kg of kava, a small bag of cannabis, a small bag of cocaine and items indicative of drug supply.

An NT Police spokesman said the ripple effect kava could have in communities was “nothing short of devastating”.

“The supply and distribution of illegal substances into vulnerable communities are a catalyst for violence and neglect within family units,” he said.

The man was charged with supplying and possessing a commercial quantity of kava, and possessing a less than trafficable quantity of cannabis and cocaine.

“Don’t speed, don’t drink or drug drive, don’t drive distracted or tired and always wear your seatbelt.”
