Nightcliff had the edge in a slippery encounter against the Tiwi Bombers as Zackery Derksen kicked six setting up a winning platform for the return of one of their favourite sons.

There had been question marks over the Tigers with only one win against a top five side opponent prior to their return fixture against the Bombers.

But any misgivings after their defeat to Southern Districts the week before quickly pushed aside as the Tigers dominated from minute one to win 17.14 (112) to 7.13 (55) in the drizzling rain.

The Brandan Parfitt homecoming was one of the big stories heading in as the AFL premiership player popped up for his first game in Nightcliff colours since he was drafted to Geelong in 2016.

The 130-gamer in the AFL started in a midfield, alongside dual Nichols medal winner Brodie Filo and the ever-busy Jonathan Lanyon, which quickly asserted its dominance in the clearance battle.

It took less than a minute for the Tigers to hit the board for the first time off the boot of Kye Declase, and two more came shortly after from Fergus Greene and Derksen to extend the advantage.

Tiwi had some bite of their own and their midfield comprised of former AFL players Sam Darley, Marlion Pickett and Matthew Parker had a noted impact.

However, inroads forward were hard to come by and excepting for the odd exciting goal from Malachi Walley or Anthony Munkara they failed for consistency in front of the posts.

The lack of Ashton Hams and Braedon McLean down back was felt with their leadership and direction often pivotal on the rebound for the Bombers.

It was an opportunity the Tigers pounced on with Bailey Boyd often crucial in either setting up a goal, particularly for Derksen who had a day out, or kicking one himself.

He wasn’t alone as Nightcliff found consistent passage out of the middle with some newcomers such as Tyrese Raymond, formally of the Buffaloes, showing what they could do.

Michael Thompson and Thaddeus Puautjimi brought some spark for the Bombers late, but by then the match had been sealed.

Jonathan Peris, who had a strong game down back before floating forward to try for a goal himself, was pleased with the result and to get a win on his relative Parfitt’s return.

“It was good to get the win after our shocking loss last week, and with some new players and my nephew Parfitt back in it was a good result,” Peris said.

“His leadership was big for us, he does a few things that prove he’s just come back from a high level and the boys really listened to what he had to say out there.

“Tiwi started well against us last time, so we knew we had to be ready for that, and it just worked out for us as in we got the ball forward and ended up having our best start.

“Our forwards were good too, I went down there at the end to have a shot but missed, it was good to see how well they did because when they click we play well.

“One more game before Christmas against Wanderers, they’re always a hard team, we won’t underestimate them and will put everything we can into it.”

PREVIEW

With a top three finish surely on the agenda of the Bombers and Tigers, a win in this game is sure to take on an extra special significance.

It’s fourth v fifth and if it’s anything like when the two teams met just five weeks ago, then expect plenty of excitement.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 4pm on Saturday.

The Bombers breezed to an early lead on November 2 on the back of their typical goal scoring prowess, and it was a lead they managed to hold on despite a late Nightcliff fight back.

Tiwi have become known for their quick starts this season and essentially had their match against Palmerston last round sewn up by halftime when lightning struck.

But they know after recent late losses they need to keep their momentum alive through the second half if they’re going to see out the tough games.

The Bombers welcomed another former AFL player in Matthew Parker to the fold in last week’s match to join their exciting group.

It’s names like his that will be need to rise to the occasion against a Nightcliff side that will have a point to prove after their heavy defeat to Southern Districts last week.

The Tigers are currently sitting fifth, slightly behind Tiwi on percentage, but will be wanting a big step up in performance this week.

Co-captain Brodie Filo was the standout against the Crocs, getting through his typical mountain of touches, but he needs more support, particularly from the men up front, to get a win here.
