St Mary’s have snapped their unexpected losing run as they showed flashes of their best against a Palmerston Magpies outfit that made life as difficult as possible.

The Green Machine had faltered either side of the Christmas break dropping four matches in a row for the first time since their wooden spoon season in 2018-19.

The reigning premiers weren’t in danger of missing finals, but if they were to drop a fifth consecutive game for the first time in their history serious doubts would have been cast on their season.

They managed to avoid that result as they took charge of proceedings to win 11.11 (77) to 4.8 (32), and celebrate game 100 for Jacob Long at the same time.

Palmerston came out with a point to prove just as they did against Wanderers two weeks ago, a match that ended in a draw as they faded late.

Jayden Davey was again busy and a constant source of danger running up the field, but there was little reward for those efforts as they only came away with behinds.

It gave room for the Saints midfield, bolstered by the inclusion of Connor West and Joel Garner, to grab hold of the contest and give Jackson Calder the chances he had been deprived of lately.

Dylan Landt showed some of the brilliance he’s become famous for running through the middle and gathering disposals, while his brother Jack Landt had another strong outing in front of goal.

There were moments when Saints were let down by their own finishing unable to convert more of their chances into majors, but it was a better performance than had been the case in recent times.

And to add to Palmerston’s scoring problems was the defensive aptitude of Kieran Parnell and Liam O’Brien, both able to disrupt play and turn defence into attack on the rebound.

Palmerston steeled themselves in the second half and ensured they weren’t completely swept aside as the likes of Ryan Warfe and skipper Shaun Wilson made the contest a constant battle.

There was also a popular goal for former Tiwi Bombers captain Patrick Heenan, making his Premier League debut for the Magpies, after he made the switch from the backline to the forwards.

But those little moments weren’t enough to deprive Saints of the win they’ve been hunting for within their slump.

“It’s good to get over that slump, we had four losses on the trot so it’s good to get back on the winner’s list,” Long said, after a strong effort in his milestone game.

“And to do it in my 100 games, that’s what you want to do is get wins in milestones games, that’s what we aim to do at St Mary’s.

“We were all focused on the win and picking up slack from the start, our skills were a bit off but we managed to get over the line, and while I didn’t get a goal the win is what mattered most.

“We knew we were the fitter team, but we couldn’t count Palmerston out so it was a grind early on and then we picked up skills and finished well.

“Now we’re focused on getting ready for finals, there’s some tough games to go and we’ve fallen down a bit so we need to keep winning from here.”

PREVIEW

For the first time since their wooden spoon season of 2018-19 have St Mary’s lost four matches in a row and, however unlikely it may seem, Palmerston has the opportunity to make it five.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the clash between the Saints and Magpies from 7pm on Saturday.

The Green Machine were unable to make an impact on the contest against a very composed Nightcliff in last week’s Friday night match and have slipped to fifth as a result of their unexpected losing run.

But there’s no time for them to dwell on those results with their focus now solely needing to be on breaking the run against Palmerston.

Dylan Landt is rediscovering his pre-injury form and got plenty of touches against the Tigers, while Josh Smithson was perhaps the best for Saints in the midfield.

Palmerston are coming off a break and before that probably their best outing of the season, which ended in a draw against Wanderers.

Before a third-quarter lightning break the Magpies looked like an outfit that had put in the hard yards in training to trouble the competition.

Palmerston is a young side but the likes of Shaun Wilson bringing experience as captain and ex-Essendon talent Jayden Davey back in the fold will make them a threat to the wounded Saints.
