The St Mary’s women have powered into the grand final after a resounding defeat of reigning premiers PINT.
The Saints have been a growing force in the women’s premier league for some time and with their winning run now at 16 have put themselves in position to win their first grand final since 2009-10.
They took some time to break free of their foes, who have for so long been the benchmark side, but when they did they made it count, despite inaccuracies, running out to a 5.13 (43) to 2.6 (18).
Ciaralii Parnell was everywhere across the ground while Janet Baird and Nikita Long held down the defensive end defeating the side that beat them in last year’s grand final.
Jasmyn Hewett was again a standout in the ruck, but the Queenants own inaccuracies was an area they will want to rectify before next week’s prelim against Nightcliff.
PREVIEW
Two NTFL women’s juggernauts are set for a collision course in a must-watch semi-final at TIO Stadium.
Competition powerhouse PINT will take on St Mary’s, who in Round 16 handed the Queenants their first loss in almost two years, in a rematch of last year’s grand final.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 2.15pm on Saturday.
The Green Machine, now on its own 15-match winning streak, was well up to that contest hitting the front early and keeping hold as to conquer the previously unbeaten reigning premiers 6.2 (38) to 2.6 (18).
Nadia von Bertouch and Emily Forshaw were among the standouts in that meeting as Saints proved they could finish out a game against the league’s benchmark side.
St Mary’s drew with PINT in last year’s regular season and led them in both the grand final and their Round 3 meet of this season, but fell away late in both to suffer defeat instead.
Now though they have a chance to make it two wins in a row and earn direct entry to the grand final, befitting their winning run that dates back to that third round.
They again showed their prowess against Nightcliff in the qualifier with their ability to keep the Tigers forwards quiet, courtesy of Janet Baird and Nikita Long, most impressive.
PINT are still well in the hunt for their fourth women’s premier league title in five years and, after a week off, will be refreshed for the challenge ahead.
Captain Reni Hicks has had another stellar season in the midfield while Jasmyn Hewett has, as always, been a force to be reckoned with in the ruck contest.
Stella Ajani and Paige Sheppard have been others to put their hands up while they’ve had a few goal scoring options including Steph Lawrence.
But most importantly, as proven by their recent record, this is a side that knows how to play and win finals.
The full match replay will be available at the conclusion of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
