Replay: Darwin Buffaloes v Southern Districts - 2024-25 NTFL Round 5

Cazalys Arena played host to a Sunday afternoon bloodbath when the still undefeated Southern Districts mauled the Buffaloes in relentless fashion.

The top of the table Crocs showed no mercy to the last-placed Darwin Buffaloes, piling on the points for fun, with only inaccuracies in front of goal preventing more.

While they showed heart, Darwin suffered their biggest loss of the season in an unflattering 24.24 (168) to 2.5 (17) scoreline.

The visitors got their campaign underway almost instantly as in-form Matt Shannon slotted the first major of the game in the opening two minutes.

District’s high press overwhelmed the Double Blues from the offset, with Matt Shannon and Jed Anderson running riot.

Darwin had a few moments of promise through Baxter Mensch and Tyson Cronin but they couldn’t penetrate the Crocs’ backline.

Stanley Waistcoat was impressive after his stint down south and in the QAFL, roaming up front, while Jack Sexton and Wyatt Ryan dominated the middle.

Despite kicking eight majors in the second term, the Crocs were their own worst enemies with missed shots and poor decision-making in attack denying them a bigger lead.

A dejected and defeated Buffaloes bench provided no positive injection of any kind in the last 20 minutes as the Buffs plodded around the oval waiting for the match to end.

Waistcoat enjoyed his afternoon with six majors and Will Farrer finished alongside him late on the scoresheet when he kicked four alone in the last term.

Matt Shannon would finish with three, while Anderson and Sexton enjoyed braces.

The 100-point deficit for the Buffaloes came up in the third term and more pain was ensured in the last as Crocs showed no mercy slamming on another eight goals to one.

The chasm between the two sides was no more evident when teenager Shane Warford goaled at the 11-minute mark of the last quarter.

It was the Buffaloes’ first goal since the 12-minute mark of the first quarter.

Sporting a new blonde do and fitter than ever, six-goal man Waistcoat put down his performance and his sides to effort.

“Yeah we got a big score on them (Buffaloes), but we kept going despite a big lead,” he said.

“We were very good in the middle and those boys were good at getting the ball for us to score.

“I think that the coaches might be a bit upset though because we ended with 24 (behinds), so the score and percentage could’ve been much bigger.”

PREVIEW

Southern Districts’ undefeated run got a major scare against PINT last round, but will that be an advantage to a Darwin Buffaloes outfit that have yet to get on the winner’s column?

The Darwin Buffaloes are winless to start the NTFL season, and will clash with the undefeated competition front-runners, but they may just have the blueprint to overcome the Crocs.

The two sides will come face-to-face on a rare Sunday afternoon clash at Cazalys Stadium.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment from 4pm on Sunday.

Buffaloes will need to pull out every trick in their arsenal, and might have learned a couple more from rivals PINT last weekend.

The Crocs were on cruise control early agaisnt PINT last weekend, before the Greenants got the better of the hot conditions to outscore their rivals 43-15 in the second half.

It’s a finish that will still be on their minds of Southern Districts players and one they will have spent all week ensuring won’t happen again.

This is an elite outfit with prime players across the ground from Jed Anderson, Wyatt Ryan and Matt Shannon in the middle to their backline which features ex-AFL midfielder Steven Motlop.

The unity between their topline stars has been the key to the Crocs early-season success as they continue their hunt for a perfect start to the season.

That has not been the case for the Darwin Buffaloes, who suffered their fourth loss of the season and remain the only winless side in the competition.

They did run it close to the Tiwi Bombers until the breaking moment in the final few minutes, but with Jarrod Stokes and Tom Simpson both playing well there is still hope going forward.
