Replay: Tiwi Bombers v Waratah—NTFL Round 6

Waratah have fought back from an early scare to post a convincing victory against a fast-starting Tiwi Bombers outfit.

The reigning premiers may have been stunned early, but, as they’re known to do, did the hard yards when needed to come away 16.14 (110) to 9.6 (60) winners.

Tiwi burst out of the blocks on the back of Karlson Kantilla’s ruck work and found their forwards found themselves with plenty of possession.

And they were quick to convert that time on the ball into scores, with the experience of Roy Kantilla and Paddy Heenan allowing Edward Puruntatameri-Dunn to kick the game opener.

The early surge didn’t stop there and soon enough the Bombers found themselves three goals up, and somewhat in a threatening position.

However, despite the early deficit Waratah dug in and bit by bit worked their way into the encounter with former Sydney Swan Ryan Clarke picking up plenty of the ball on his NTFL debut.

His work in tandem with Brodie Carroll and Scott Carlin, who have both enjoyed great starts to the season, saw the ball finally head Waratah’s way midway through the opening quarter.

Jayden Magro was busy in their forward line, constantly searching for options with Toby Hutt and Jack O’Sullivan among the scorers, and as a result the premiers had six goals in a row and the lead.

Waratah further cemented the lead as the game wore on as they dominated the midfield battle, with the likes of Ed Morris and Alex Pulling also raising their hands.

Sam Darley was the standout for Tiwi down back, and his efforts alongside Michael Dunn and Kurt Dunn, ensured Waratah’s forwards weren’t allowed to dominate as much as they would have liked.

Tiwi also had their moments on the attack late in the piece, with natural offensive flair, but missed marks went against them.

O’Sullivan proved himself a rock defensively too, moving down back in the second half, as the game broke open, while Anthony Munkara also worked his way into the match.

But Tah’s midfield dominance won the day, and though there were mistakes throughout they proved they’re a side which can adapt in difficult circumstances.

“We had to adapt to the conditions, while they play at this time every week and do it well, it was warm and they were super quick so we had to be on from the start,” Carlin said.

“We had to literally try and stop their run, we had to stop them getting on top and had to dictate the play and limit what they could do when on the ball.

“Our midfield unit is really coming together, Carroll has been great this season, Pulling has been a great addition and Clark was super, coming in adding leadership and experience.

“It’s super important to win a game in these conditions, we lost a couple of tight games and knew this block before Christmas would be crucial, we’ve got to win these winnable games.

“We know there’s a few hard games in the run ahead and it comes down to training hard, and hopefully we can get a few good wins in before the break.”

PREVIEW

Reigning premiers Waratah know they can’t take Tiwi Bombers for granted in what promises to be a thrilling Round 6 match on Saturday.

And the NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream all the action from 2pm.

The Bombers were due to play their first match at their home field in Wurrumiyanga this weekend, but recent weather events meant this clash was moved to at TIO Stadium.

Tiwi are coming off the back of two losses, but they have shown enough to suggest they could pose some real problems for Waratah.

The Kantillas, in particular, are players to watch out for with Brendan and Kim constant livewires, while Round 3 Rising Star nominee Karlson is settling into his position in the ruck.

The reigning premiers burst back into title contention with a thumping victory over PINT, with star forward Jayden Magro scoring nine goals.

Arnold Kirby, Scott Carlin and Brodie Carroll were others to put in big performances against the Muk Muks, and will be called on for more of the same against the Bombers.

The Bombers versus Waratah clash promises to be a closely contested affair if the Tiwis bring their A game.

A big win here will likely lift Waratah back among the current group of title favourites, a position they relinquished briefly following back-to-back losses in Rounds 2 and 3.

A full replay of the match will be posted here at the end of the game.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to LIVE STREAM both the men’s and selected women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
