A woman is dead and three more people have been left with “traumatic injuries” after two vehicles collided on Kirkland Rd, with authorities warning motorists to avoid the “no go” area.
NT Police said the crash at Durack between a Nissan X-Trail – that had been carrying three people – collided head-on about 5.10am with a Toyota Corolla – which held a single male occupant.
A woman who had been travelling in the X-TRAIL, was declared dead on scene.
The woman was one of two passengers who had been trapped – the other was a male in the Corolla – and extrications were ongoing at 6.15am.
About 7.21am, St John NT reported they were transporting three passengers in a serious condition with “multiple traumatic injuries” to hospital.
As at 8.30am, both lanes of Kirkland Rd have been closed between Elrundie Ave and Wishart Road.
Closures are expected to be in place until midmorning, according to NT Police.
An NT Polices spokesman said investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.
Northern Watch Commander Steve Rankine earlier in the morning advised commuters to avoid Kirkland Rd.
“Kirkland Rd is a no go zone,” he said.
Initially, the road was closed between the Durack service station near the roundabout all the way up to the Truck City precinct.
“Please do not use Kirkland Rd this morning — use University Ave or Roystonea Ave instead.”
Wednesday’s fatal crash brings the total lives lost on Territory roads to 12, compared to 21 this time last year.
Detective Sergeant Richard Musgrave urged Territorians to “take the fatal five seriously”.
“Don’t drink and drive, don’t drive fatigued or distracted, don’t speed and always wear your seatbelt,” he said.
“Anyone with information or dash-cam footage is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference P25131352.”
The crash falls on Road Safety week.
