A car has flipped and severely damaged a light pole on Progress Drive, Nightcliff, with a woman taken to hospital in an ambulance.
NT Police and emergency services attended the scene of the road crash at 11.21am on Sunday.
Fire and police crews cordoned off the area as the damaged light pole, nearly detached from its base, rested dangerously against the branches of a nearby tree.
People rushed to the scene of the accident to help out, a bystander - who wished to remain nameless - said.
A woman was trapped in the vehicle, hanging over her seatbelt while the vehicle was on its side, and people were attempting to get her out, the bystander said.
“We just heard a really big bang and the car rolled and police had to pull a woman out of the vehicle,” they said.
“Even my neighbour rushed out, we both heard it, it was all quiet and then bang, we came out and the car was like that [on its side].
“By the time I’d come out everyone came running to help her out.”
St John NT said it was called to the scene after a 35-year-old driver allegedly had a medical episode behind the wheel, causing the car to swerve off the role, hit the pole and flip on to the passenger side.
She was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition for assessment.
NT Police officers on the scene declined to comment on the incident.
