The final players in the race to August 24 are confirmed, with nominations to run in the Northern Territory election closed and ballot papers drawn.

It was revealed Labor Party president Anthony Venes would contest the safe CLP seat of Nelson, while the party would not contest the seat of Mulka.

The Country Liberals have nominated for all seats, putting forward sparkies for both of their outstanding seats; Allen Fanning for Mulka, and Sean Heenan for Araluen.

NT Greens nominated 11 candidates in total, while 20 independents are running across the Territory.

The order in which names will appear on ballot papers was randomly selected at events in Darwin and Alice Springs on Thursday afternoon – each candidate hoping for the top spot to gain a bigger share of donkey votes.

“The conventional wisdom is that the person on top of the ballot gets on aggregate an average of two per cent advantage, and the person at the bottom gets one per cent,” CDU political economist Rolf Gerritsen said.

“The trick is to be above the major competing party’s candidate.”

Professor Gerritsen predicted a swing to the CLP, but said ballot position could play a part in deciding very marginal battleground seats in the Greater Darwin region.

“I can’t see any CLP seats in danger,” he said.

“I expect a strong swing for the CLP in marginal seats they hold, so Braitling, Namatjira and Barkly ... I don’t think your position on the ballot paper will influence that,” he said.

Professor Gerritsen pointed to Labor-won seats including Blain, Fong Lim, Wanguri and Port Darwin that could see upset.

“The election is going to be decided in the metropolitan regions, in Greater Darwin – not in the bush seats,” he said.

“At most one bush seat could change, and that’s Daly. If it was the bush seats that were in play then ballot positions could have more of an influence, because there’s less canvassing out there.”

Professor Gerritsen said crime was “a big sleeper” issue that would produce “dramatic swings” in certain areas.

At the declaration of nominations in Darwin, Greens candidate for Fannie Bay Suki Dorras-Walker said she believed offering “a choice for change” would motivate people when they go to vote, not the order of names on the paper.

“I’m very excited – this makes it feel official, going into the last two weeks of the campaign,” she said.

Independent candidate Justine Davis said “100 per cent of people” she spoke with in the seat of Johnston said they wanted change.

“Overwhelmingly they lack trust in the major parties,” she said.

“People are much smarter than the major parties make out, so we’re really trusting people to make their own decision.”

Remote mobile polling and early voting will begin on Monday, with timetables and locations available at ntec.nt.gov.au.
