NT Cricket has named its team to represent the Territory on its return to the National Indigenous Cricket Championships next month.
For the first time in its history the NICC will be held in Mackay from April 2-7, having moved from Alice Springs last year.
However, that has allowed NT Cricket to use the Imparja Cup’s 32nd edition in February as an important vehicle for team selection.
The NT did not field a team in the 2024 edition of the tournament following a poor showing the year prior and lacking nominations.
Lachlan Dunemann from Tennant Creek will lead the 14-man squad as reward for efforts both at the recent Imparja Cup and emerging leadership on NT Cricket’s Indigenous Advisory Committee.
Daniel Fett from Palmerston took his opportunity at the Imparja Cup and won the Rossy Williams and Shane Franey ‘Most Valuable Player’ for standout performances throughout the tournament
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Harrison Johnny impressed everyone at the Imparja Cup with his raw talent, pace and athleticism.
The side will be coached by Trent Keep, who was recently appointed as the NT’s Pathway and Talent Development Coach, while Ben Abbatangelo and Ray White will travel as support staff.
NT Head of Cricket Nick Winter said he was thrilled for the players to regain the opportunity to represent the Territory at the tournament.
“After the disappointment of last year it was really important to get the Northern Territory back into the NICC as soon as possible,” he said.
“Given the Territory’s strong connection to Indigenous culture and communities this was an important step, and I know how much it means to our players.
“The recent Imparja Cup showed there are some very talented Indigenous cricketers here in the Territory.
“Our challenge now is to continue providing more opportunities for Indigenous players in the Territory to play and develop.”
The NICC is now in its eight year and forms part of Australian cricket’s elite development pathway, with the aim of having more Indigenous cricketers represent Australia at the highest level.
