The NT government says the Territory has stood up and showed its tourism strength with a blockbuster Kings Birthday holiday weekend.
Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said as well as today’s traditional birthday honours recognition, four huge events capped off the birthday celebrations.
Ms Boothby pointed to the iconic Tatts Finke Desert Race, Barunga Festival, Darwin GleNTi Festival and Beer Can Regatta.
“This weekend, filled with such a variety of vibrant events, has showcased the Territory at its best, with something for everyone to enjoy,” said Ms Boothby.
“Our dry season calendar is packed with so many unique Territory experiences, and this weekend has drawn many people to celebrate culture, creativity, and good old Territory fun.
“These events, provide a huge economic and social boost.”
Organisers of all events have reported a big turn out.
Greek Orthodox Community President Michael Koulianos said it was great to see thousands of people at the Esplanade enjoying a weekend of Greek culture.
“The Darwin GleNTi was a great celebration of multiculturalism in the Northern Territory, and we can’t wait to bring it back again next year,” he promised.
Beer Can Regatta Chairperson Connell Brannelly was equally as enthusiastic
“It was a great weekend of racing with plenty of creative boats out on the water once again this year,” she said.
“The regatta is a true Territory tradition that brings people together to get creative, cheer on the competitors, relax and have some fun.”
The 37th Barunga Festival also continues today, with people enjoying a four-day celebration of immersing in Aboriginal culture through music, sport, live entertainment, and more on Jawoyn country.
“We promised Territorians a year of action, certainty and security, and we are proud to continue delivering on this promise by supporting our major events,” said Ms Boothby.
“Thank you to all of the organisers, volunteers, local businesses and everyone who attended to support our fantastic major events.”
