For almost a quarter of a century, Darwin’s Throb Nightclub delivered and captured some of the town’s most joyful nights out, with generations of party goers having passed through its doors.

Founded in 2000, Darwin’s first openly LGBTQIA+ friendly nightclub made itself known to the local community to the tune of some of the biggest hits of the 90’s and noughties, including favourites from the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC.

Whether it was the peak of Dry season or during the Wet season lull, the nightclub soon forged a reputation for being a vibrant, colourful venue for locals and visitors keen for a fun night out.

With the club having closed its doors, the NT News decided to revisit the archives of the past.

The club’s albums provide a time capsule, with trending hairstyles and fashions of the time captured in all their glory.

The club itself evolved as well, from resembling something of a local community hall to become the cutting-edge, beloved nightclub of the north.

Beyond its Christmas and Halloween specials events, the club also put extensive effort into its riveting live performances, with dancers and singers taking centre stage regularly to the delight of club’s party faithful.

The club was also prepared to push the boundaries, with fetish-themed acts involving shackles and cuffs also featured.

While the faces of Throb are diverse in gender, age and race, a common joy could be clearly seen on its patrons smiling faces.
