Darwin basketball fans will be in seventh heaven next June when the world famous Harlem Globetrotters touch down in the Top End as part of their 2024 tour of Australian and New Zealand.

The visit will mark the first time in decades the legendary ballers will return to the NT, with the family friendly show set down for June 24.

During their previous trip down under last year, the Globetrotters drew massive crowds keen to see their exceptional skills and showmanship, packing them in from Launceston to Townsville.

The inclusion of Darwin on next year’s itinerary comes as basketball continues to soar in popularity across the Territory on the back of the Darwin Salties’ success in the NBL1.

Harlem Globetrotters international booking director Arnold Bernard said the squad was “absolutely delighted to be coming to Darwin” as part of the 2024 world tour.

“Australia has always been one of our favourite places to travel to because of the unbelievable passion and support we get from the fans,” he said.

“We have no doubt the people of Darwin will provide that same fantastic support and we can’t wait to get there next June.”

Chief Minister, Natasha Fyles said even those not swept up in Salties mania would find plenty to enjoy in the Globetrotters’ dazzling performance.

“Attracting an international event of this calibre to the Territory provides world-class entertainment for Territorians and delivers a boost to the local economy through visitation, tourism and hospitality,” she said.

“Basketball is a popular and rapidly growing sport in Darwin, so it’s wonderful to be able to bring some of the best players in the world to the Territory through the Harlem Globetrotters.

“Our young basketballers will get to watch some of the greats in action without having to go interstate and even non-basketballers will find plenty to entertain them at this show.”

Founded in 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters have played in front of many thousands of spectators in more than 100 countries, wowing audiences with their athleticism and showmanship.
