Last home in historic Doctors Gully up for sale

The only house in one of Darwin’s most historic areas has been listed for sale. It has no neighbours on one side and retains its 1950s charm. Here’s when it will go to auction.

Housing prices likely to continue falling until interest rates 'stabilise'

The last house in a section of one of Darwin’s most tightly held suburbs is up for grabs in a rare buying opportunity.

The home at 12 Doctors Gully Rd, Larrakeyah is going to auction with Real Estate Central.

The home in the historic area has no neighbours on one side and an apartment block on the other.

Real Estate Central sales professional Tom Kiem said the house was built around 1951 and despite cosmetic touch ups following damage from Cyclone Tracy in 1974, it’s not been updated.

“It is in excellent condition,” he said.

“It’s the last elevated home in Doctors Gully, the rest were knocked down and developed.

“There are no neighbours on one side, a beautiful reserve in front, a creek that flows not 50m from the front door. If you go up one level if you wanted to rebuild, you’d have uninterrupted views of the water.”

The home sits on a 728sqm block and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Mr Kiem said there’d been significant local interest, with buyers from Victoria and New South Wales also intrigued.

Larrakeyah is historically considered one of Darwin’s most tightly held suburbs, with homes passed down through family generations.

Mr Kiem said for this reason and the potential to renovate or redevelop, it would be one of the rarest property opportunities in Darwin.

“Anyone wanting to get into the area would be remiss if they didn’t go to the auction,” he said.

“It’s already LMR zoned, you can build townhouses if you wanted or rezone and develop.

“There are no limits on what you can do.”

The auction for 12 Doctors Gully Rd is on October 25 at 6pm.

Doctors Gully is named after Dr Robert Peel, the medical officer in George Goyder’s survey party in 1869.

The area is known for the Aquascene Fish Feeding attraction and is the site of the heritage listed area Peel’s Well.
