The third edition of the Garrison Fight Challenge proved a winner with local fighters getting their chance to mix it with some of the best from across the country.
The event put together by Garrison Muay Thai’s Trent Hansen and Valerie Lappas featured must-watch action across Saturday night and allowed Territory talents to show their stuff.
“We brought fighters up from Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Perth and the Gold Coast as well as a fighter each from Luxembourg and Thailand,” Hansen said.
“It was good, there were quite a few stoppages and all the fights were well-matched, they were all good bouts and plenty of time for fighters to figure out their opponents.
“And we had a better turnout than we had in our last show, back then we just picked the wrong weekend with a lot else on but this one was much better.”
Garrison’s own Jayden Moyle and Isaak Kadel got their chance to step in the ring against interstate talents and despite losses both made an impression with damaging shots.
For Kadel it was his first time facing a southpaw (a left hander) and he stuck it out for four rounds against the difficult opposition.
“Our boys both got stopped, but they were fighting high calibre fighters from down south,” Hansen said.
“Jayden got stopped by low kicks early, both fighters were going for leg stuff, but he showed heart and he did us proud.
“Isaak did really well, he got to the fourth round against a guy with three times as much experience and he played the southpaw game well staying away from his power shots.
“He was feinting, switching and upsetting the other guy’s rhythm but struggled to find his range and was caught with a nice power shot in the fourth, we were happy considering it was his second pro fight.
“It was about exposing them to this level, you can’t just keep giving them easy fights, you have to test and build their character and see what they can pull off.”
Other Territory gyms such as North Side Combat Conditioning, Performance Gym and Lukphinong Muaythai also showing off their local fighters.
“Everyone around the country is noticing us now and we’re getting our name out there through these events,” Hansen said.
“We want to set the standard for NT combat sports and keep bringing these quality fights that people want to see.”
