Former Northern Territory politician Nick Dondas AM dies aged 84

The former CLP Deputy Chief Minister and federal MP is being remembered as a keen rugby player, a larger than life character, and a ‘true Territorian’ to the end.

Former Northern Territory politician Nick Dondas AM is being remembered as a larger than life character after his death aged 84 at the weekend.

Born in Perth to Greek migrant parents, Mr Dondas was first elected to Territory parliament in 1974.

He was Country Liberal member for Casuarina for 20 years, during that time holding portfolios including health, industry, and transport, serving as Deputy Chief Minister from 1983 to 1987, and Speaker from 1989 to 1994.

Mr Dondas then moved into a brief career in federal politics, elected as a Northern Territory MP from 1996 to 1998.

Also a keen rugby player, Mr Dondas was considered a “founding father” of the sport in the NT.

He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for helping to establish a Territory league, and was affiliated with the Nightcliff Rugby League Club, Casuarina Cougars, and Tracy Village.

In a social media post, his daughter Katrina remembered her father as “a larger than life character”.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nick Dondas,” she said.

“Nick passed away peacefully with his loved ones around him in Darwin.

“Nick was a larger than life character and our memories of him will live on in our hearts and minds.”

Country Liberal Party president Shane Stone said Mr Dondas made a big contribution to the Territory as one of the team leading its independence from the Commonwealth.

“He was part of that very unique group that was the self-government team under Everingham (the NT’s first Chief Minister),” Mr Stone said.

“He served in many capacities and made a real contribution to Territory politics.”

Other shared memories on Facebook remembering Mr Dondas as “a true Territorian”.

“Vale Nick. You were my first boss and a great one too! Such a kind heart and loved by many … we had some great laughs and you encouraged me to go after my dreams. Forever remembered with gratitude,” one said.

“A genuine and personable man who in my experience, maintained mutual respect for other views” said another.
