Community housing provider Venture Housing NT has appointed former Alice Springs mayor Fran Kilgariff its new chairman.
With eight years experience as a Venture Housing director, the organisation wants Ms Kilgariff to lead the non-profit into an era built on sustainable housing solutions and broader community partnerships.
Venture Housing chief executive Tim Sunwoo said Alice Springs-based Ms Kilgariff’s vision and longstanding commitment to the Territory would deliver benefit for members and residents.
“Ms Kilgariff brings a wealth of experience and deep commitment to the Territory, having dedicated her career to regional and economic development, local government and community service,” Mr Sunwoo said.
“We know that our organisation will benefit greatly from Ms Kilgariff’s direction as we help to create more affordable housing options that improve lives across the regions.”
Born and raised in Alice Springs, Ms Kilgariff has qualifications in radiography, prehistoric archaeology and teaching.
During her eight year tenure as Alice Springs mayor from 2000, Ms Kilgariff promoted policies around community engagement and regional growth.
She is currently chair of the Olive Pink Botanic Garden, on the NT Parole Board and NT Mental Health Tribunal and is an ambassador for FortuneAgri’s Singleton Station orchard project.
Ms Kilgariff said she was honoured to have been named Venture Housing chair.
“Housing is fundamental to building strong, resilient communities and I look forward to working with the board, our partners and stakeholders in this new capacity to make a positive difference for Territorians.”
She praised her predecessor as chairman Allan McGill, who she said had served the role with distinction. Mr McGill will remain on the board.
“Under Mr McGill’s guidance, Venture Housing has strengthened its governance, expanded partnerships and advanced its mission to provide affordable housing across the NT,” she said.
Venture owns and manages about 550 social and affordable homes across Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and Tennant Creek with a focus on affordable housing options for very low, and low to moderate income earners.
Venture Housing and City of Palmerston are currently embroiled in a dispute about payment of municipal rates. A Supreme Court decision is expected shortly.
