Distress beacons spark concerns for welfare

July 26: Police are concerned for the welfare of a person in the Tiwi Islands area after two flares were activated about 7pm Thursday.

An NT Police spokesman said no “vessels or parties in distress” had been located despite the beacons.

The spokesman said the flares had been spotted by military personnel off the southern coast of Melville Island and Bathurst Island and were reported to police about 11pm.

They said the NT Police Search and Rescue Section had been deployed in the search, which involved multiple rescue vessels, an AirWing, and a CareFlight helicopter.

The spokesman said nearby military vessels were also looking for the source of the flares.

They urged anyone with information of an overdue vessel in the area to contact police on 131 444.
