Darwin’s top spot for parking fines revealed

ALMOST 18,000 parking fines have been issued in Darwin over the last 12 months, costing drivers a staggering $734,000 in total.

Figures obtained by the NT News shows that Darwin council parking inspectors have issued more than 17,690 tickets during the 2020/2021 financial year to date.

The majority of Darwinites got slogged with a ticket in the CBD area, with 16,292 fines handed out in the city and 1,398 issued in the suburbs over that period.

Of the tickets issued, the fines amount to $666,135 in total for the CBD area and $68,120 for the suburbs.

It comes as the cost of parking in the Darwin CBD is set to rise with the start of the new financial year.

A report obtained by the NT News ofDarwin council’s proposed fees and charges for 2021/22 shows all metered on-street parking in the CBD is set to increase by five per cent.

Metered on-street parking will go up by 10c an hour across all zones in the city and minimum daily charge will increase from $7.50 to $8.

The cost of off-street carparking will also increase with a the price of a 12-month parking permit at West Lane set to go up from $2790 to $2950, in Chinatown from $2240 to $2360, Cavenagh St, Nichols Pl, Darwin Oval from $1490 to $1570 and Mitchell/Daly St from $905 to $950.

All day parking on Cavenagh St, Nichols Pl, McLachlan St, Darwin Oval will go up from $5.70 to $6 per day and also on McMinn St, Mitchell St, Woods/Daly St, Daly/Mitchell St from $3.40 to $3.60.

Casual parking fees at West Lane from $2.10 to $2.20 per hour and at Chinatown from $1.60 to $1.70 per hour.

Residents in Darwin can inspect council’s new parking usage schedule for the 2021/2022 financial year at the customer service counter at the Darwin Civic Centre.

People have until Thursday, July 8 at 5pm to lodge an appeal against the parking usage schedule for the 2021/2022 financial year.
