The peak body representing the NT’s small business says it is crucial that government regulations are more supportive and make it easier to do business in the Northern Territory.

Chamber of Commerce Northern Territory vice president Natalie Bell said the Territory is entering a promising period of investment and growth.

She said to maximise Territory businesses’ capabilities, there needs to be fewer administrative hurdles and delays for business to have to conquer.

The chamber says now is the time for industry and the wider business community to step up and pass on their insights, feedback and experiences with regulatory challenges and red tape across industries.

Ms Bell wants businesses to have their say through the chamber’s ‘Approvals Fast Track, Cutting Red Tape’ survey.

She said the insights gathered from the Territory businesses will help with reform proposals to go to the NT Government’s Approvals Task Force Committee.

The Approvals Fast Track Taskforce was set up to provide expert advice on streamlining approvals and removing unnecessary and burdensome regulations.

The taskforce is comprised of industry experts from across the NT, and they will provide recommendations to government on how to reform regulatory processes to reduce approvals time frames by 50 per cent.

“It is exciting to see more investment and interest into our region,” Ms Bell said.

“However, to maximise Territory businesses’ capabilities, there needs to be fewer administrative hurdles and delays.

“There are some areas in the Territory where bureaucratic overlap makes it more challenging for businesses to operate and grow.

“We need to identify and advocate for these essential changes and welcome the opportunity to present feedback from our members to the Taskforce.

“This is all about implementing more efficient processes and procedures that support business and support investment and growth of Territory businesses, and future projects coming to our region.

“This is an opportunity for Chamber NT members and businesses of all sizes across different sectors to provide specific feedback on the regulations and processes impacting their business operations.

“It is a chance to suggest improvements to enhance efficiency and outcomes and reduce the burden on business and industry.

The survey closes Thursday 17th April and is available on the Chamber website and online at Approvals Fast Track – Cutting Red Tape Survey

Additionally, roundtables and one-on-one meeting opportunities will be held for Chamber NT members to discuss and provide feedback and recommendations as part of the consultation process.

A summary of the survey’s findings during the consultation process will be submitted to the Approvals Fast Track Taskforce, which will make recommendations directly to the Chief Minister. These insights will also be included in the Chamber’s advocacy work in 2025 and beyond.
