The Red Centre capital’s council has announced its new vision for the CBD with a flash video – but the plans aren’t finalised yet.
On Wednesday morning, Alice Springs Town Council posted a video showing a new look CBD for the town as part of the council’s “Regenerating the Alice Springs Town Centre” plan.
Mayor Matt Paterson said a “substantial” amount of work had gone into the designs, with work beginning on the project in 2022.
“This is further on from the concepts that were designed last year and this is a 50 per cent design,” Mr Paterson said.
“I just urge people to jump on and have a look and make their suggestions known because we’re still listening, and we really want to make sure that the community happy with what we’re going to invest in.”
The video shows concept designs for Todd Mall, Todd Street, the Hartley St carpark, and Leichhardt Tce.
The new areas have basketball courts, benches for seating, large shade sculptures, plenty of green space, and more.
Hartley St Museum co-ordinator Joel Crawford said the new designs improve what is “very much run down look” for the CBD, but he also had his apprehensions.
“I am also of the hope that it is not the start to over modernising a part of town that is also much of great Heritage to the town,” he said.
“Many visitors and tourists often come to this town to see the uniqueness of the town like Adelaide House, Residency, Old Stuart Town Gaol and the Hartley Street School Museum.
“(The new designs) must have the balance of the Old Alice of Yesterday and the New Alice of today. Both are important in my opinion.”
The public has until February 24, 2025 to give the council feedback via a survey.
Mr Paterson said once the council has received the public’s feedback on the project, they will go back to drawing board and release a new set of designs.
He said Alice Springs residents could expect to see updated concepts later this year.
