ALICE Springs Town Council has supported the application for a liquor license for a new “high-end nightclub” with a “strict dress-code” to be located on a council-owned premises on Hartley Street.

Council voted unanimously in favour to not object the license application at its May ordinary meeting on Tuesday night following a discussion around the potential social and community impacts.

BUDGET 2021/22: WHAT THE NT IS GETTING

The Director of Liquor Licensing at the NT Liquor Commission wrote to the Council last month seeking comment on the application, and the commission will make the final decision on the matter.

In reaching its decision, Council considered a report prepared by Director Corporate Services Sabine Taylor.

“Thought should be given as to the large number of licensed venues within the municipality, as well as the wider impacts of alcohol-related harm in our community,” Ms Taylor wrote in the report.

“This harm can be seen to contribute to the wider issues relating to crime and anti-social behaviour, with such issues being at the forefront of recent media coverage relating to Alice Springs.

“Such concerns must be weighed against the potential benefits of encouraging business and enterprise in Alice Springs, particularly business within the CBD and that relating to the hospitality industry, which has been significantly impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

The Liquor Act states an objection may only be made on the grounds that issuing the license would adversely affect the amenity of the surrounding neighbourhood, the “the health, education, public safety or social conditions” of the community, or if the applicant is not deemed a fit and proper person.

The applicant for the license is Blade Davies-Roundhill, who has registered the business name ZERO870 as the intended name for the nightclub.

Proposed opening hours for ZERO870 are 9pm-2am on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, as well as all public holidays.

Mr Davies-Roundhill has three other local businesses registered, which are Integral Transport Services, Alice Springs Pawnbrokers Secondhand, and Blade’s Quality Cars.

Until January this year Mr Davies-Roundhill also had a registered business called Vision Solar Solutions Oz.
