A 23-year-old man has appeared in the Alice Springs Local Court charged with murder following a fatal stabbing outside the Todd Tavern last Thursday.

Ricky Martin was charged with murder and appeared in court on Tuesday morning.

Martin’s supporters filled the courtroom, with some breaking down in tears as he entered the room.

Judge David Bamber adjourned the matter for a Preliminary Examination Mention on August 29.

There was no application for bail.

Martin kept his head low as supporters called out to him as he was escorted from the courtroom.

The 23-year-old was charged with murder after a 32-year-old man was assaulted with an edged weapon on Todd St, outside of Todd Tavern, last Thursday.

He was transported to Alice Springs Hospital in a critical condition but died as a result of his injuries.

Witnesses on social media described seeing a large contingent of police vehicles at the scene, with officers appearing to guard a St John Ambulance vehicle.

Another reported “a huge loss of blood”.

The road was closed for several hours as police began investigating.

Police arrested the 23-year-old man soon after the alleged incident, and he has remained in police custody since.

St John Ambulance service director Andrew Thomas on Friday said a paramedic was struck in the head while trying to help the 32-year-old.

“(Thursday), St John NT staff dealt with a number of cases which were difficult, confronting and impactful,” Mr Thomas said.

“On top of these we unfortunately saw one of our paramedics being assaulted while performing their role in trying to save a life at an incident near the Todd Tavern in Alice Springs.

“St John NT fully supports all legal action to be taken against perpetrators of violence and aggression to any of our staff and also supports staff removing or withdrawing from locations if they are threatened or feel unsafe,” Mr Thomas said.
