Members of the public will be able to report dangerous hoon driving to the police in realtime with a new mobile app.
The new Traffic Watch system will allow people to send information about traffic incidents online. Information submitted through the app will primarily be used by SAPOL to determine, in realtime, where vehicle patrols and mobile speed cameras should be deployed, as well as random breath and drug testing stations.
Traffic Watch is available through the SAPOL app, which can be downloaded from the Apple and Android app stores.
It is the first time South Australians have been able to lodge immediate details of hoon and unsafe driving online.
Users will be able to submit information including a brief report of what happened, time, date and registration plate numbers.
Those submitting details of incidents will be asked whether they have video or photographic evidence and police will be able to contact them if they wish to take investigations further.
They will also be asked if anyone was injured, if they are prepared to make a statement and if property was damaged as a result.
If the app believes the incident is an emergency, or something that requires police attendance, it will prompt users to call either 000 or 131 444.
In launching the app, Police Minister Corey Wingard said it would make it easier for people to report traffic offences that would otherwise go unnoticed.
“When doorknocking ahead of the last election, dangerous and hoon driving was often raised with me as a key concern among the community,” Mr Wingard said.
“It’s vital we have a system in place where the community can easily report incidents and this type of dangerous behaviour.”
SAPOL will now begin a campaign to promote the service and educate the public on what kind of matters should be reported.
