New Hinchinbrook MP outlines ambitious agenda for crime and traffic congestion
Hinchinbrook has gained a new voice with Wayde Chiesa’s swearing-in at parliament and maiden speech promising action on crime, road infrastructure, and economic revitalisation. Watch his speech.
Queensland’s parliament has officially welcomed its newest politician, the member for Hinchinbrook Wayde Chiesa, who was sworn in and delivered his maiden speech on Tuesday.
Mr Chiesa was sworn in after being declared the winner of the Hinchinbrook by-election by the Electoral Commission of Queensland on Monday, following the resignation of former MP Nick Dametto, who was elected Townsville’s new mayor.
The new Hinchinbrook MP was delighted to take on the role, saying on social media, “you voted for a seat at the table of government and I’m going to work relentlessly to deliver for our region”.
During his maiden speech to parliament, the former Regional Development Australia chief executive and Triple M Cowboys broadcaster thanked his family and outlined an ambitious agenda addressing traffic congestion, youth crime and regional development, while also celebrating his North Queensland roots and early wins for his electorate.
“Throughout the campaign, the community told me they wanted more action on crime. 40 per cent of youth crime is being perpetrated by repeat youth offenders out on bail, and bail reform is vitally important to me and our community,” Mr Chiesa said.
Speaking about the traffic bottleneck at North Shore and the Bohle Bridge, he said the congestion was negatively impacting families, and detailed planning work would be carried out to address the issue.
Flood-plagued sections of the Bruce Highway north of Ingham, between Gairloch and Ripple Creek, will receive much-needed attention, along with the long-awaited revitalisation of Port Hinchinbrook to transform it into a thriving tourism, economic and residential area.
