SYDNEY fashion designer Wayne Cooper and his estranged defacto wife Sarah Marsh have been ordered by a judge to attend a mediation session to try to agree on the division of their assets outside of a court room.

Supreme Court Justice David Hammerschlag today formalised an interim order for the couple's million-dollar beachfront home to be sold.

Cooper, 44, packed his belongings and moved out of the glamourous Tamarama house in June after he was charged with assaulting and intimidating Ms Marsh, 40.

Under the terms of an interim apprehended violence order, he must not approach Ms Marsh or go near his former home.

He has vowed to "vigorously defend" the charges.

Neither party was in court yesterday to hear the formal orders, which also concerned their luxury cars and access to funds in their accounts.

Yesterday, the pair sat on opposite sides of the court room and did not speak before lunching independently with their lawyers.

Justice Hammerschlag ordered Ms Marsh - an unemployed former model - to cooperate with allowing a real estate agent to conduct inspections through the property, which would yield both her and Cooper about $100,000 each after its sale.

He also ordered her to return a 2007 black Jaguar XT to Cooper so that it could be sold to repay an amount owing on it.

In exchange, Cooper was ordered to provide her with a Volkswagon and to fund the running costs, including insurance.

But an additional application by Ms Marsh's barrister, James Emmett, for Cooper to also pay for compulsory third party insurance on the car was refused today.

Ms Marsh, who initially sought $5,000 a month from Cooper in maintenance payments, was instead granted access to a $28,000 trust fund after the court heard she was paid $15,000 last month for a television interview about the breakdown of the relationship.

After making the orders, Justice Hammerschlag directed the couple to attend a mediation session before the matter goes to a hearing on November 20.
