MATTHEW Russell has been charged with murder after last Friday’s deadly shooting in the southwest Sydney suburb of Heckenburg.
The 28-year-old handed himself into Bankstown Police Station late Tuesday morning where he was arrested and interviewed by detectives.
He will face Bankstown Local Court charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, shoot with intent to murder and a variety of firearms charges.
Qusay Al Mhanawi died from head and chest wounds after being hit by bullets as he sat in his car. Police believe the shots were meant for two brothers who had been in an altercation with Russell earlier that night.
Mr Mhanawi’s funeral was held in Liverpool today.
Police have been targeting friends and associates of Russell over the past three days in their hunt for him. In a major operation yesterday three people were arrested amid raids on properties in Sydney’s southwest suburbs.
Green Valley Police Superintendent Paul Fryer said the activity was all about vigorously pursing Mr Russell.
“We know there are people out there protecting Mr Russell,” he told the Seven Network.
