Vinnies Book Sale

WITH 25,000 books to choose from, there is a pretty good chance Far Northern readers will find something to interest them this weekend.

Art, travel, history, health, cookery, kids’ books, gardening and hobbies will all be catered for when the annual St Vincent de Paul Vinnies Family Fun three-day mega book sale throws open its doors to the public tomorrow.

For the first time St Vinnies has partnered with Cairns Libraries to offer its annual book sale through to Sunday.

Executive officer David Monaghan said Vinnies hoped to raise $20,000, which would be used by the network of 14 Far North Queensland centres to provide emergency relief, help for domestic violence victims and those living below the poverty line.

Doors will be open from 9am-5pm at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal on Wharf St.

Retail operations manager, Katrina Lee said there would be face painting for a gold coin donation, a sausage sizzle, clothes and bric-a-brac and no book costs more than $3.

Another not-for-profit group called Story Dogs will be running craft workshops and telling stories.

“Everything we are doing is for a good cause and to help make people’s lives better,” Ms Lee said.

“Rather than just making money, we are doing it for a real reason. The money goes back into our community and those people who are disadvantaged we are helping.”

Kid’s Choice

BOOKS by popular children’s author Graeme Base, best known for his 1986 masterpiece Animalia, are on sale at the Vinnies book sale. Now out of print, Eye to Eye and The Waterhole will be much sought after.
