A MAN will face court charged with murder following a bloody park brawl in New South Wales involving up to 30 people.
A 32-year-old man was questioned at Tweed Heads police station and has been charged with murder, wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and larceny.
He was denied bail and will appear in the Tweed Heads Local Court later on Wednesday.
Police said investigations were continuing into the brawl, at Knox Park in Murwillumbah, that witnesses said up to 30 people were involved in.
A video of the aftermath shows at least two men lying on the ground being attended to by others as paramedics arrive on scene.
“Get over here now, hurry up ... my husband can’t breathe ... get over here now,” a woman can be heard screaming on the video.
The victim, Charlie Larter, was killed on his birthday, and had been coming to the aid of his son Zack who had allegedly attacked with a kitchen knife. A family friend was the other injured man.
Mr Larter’s sister, Cathy Larter, told the Gold Coast Bulletin, she wished her brother a “happy birthday” and told him she loved him.
“He was planning to go have some drinks and go to the pub with his family ... next thing I hear he has been killed and my nephew is in surgery,” she said.
Police told news.com.au they were called to the scene after reports of a fight, just before 12.30pm on Tuesday.
Shortly before 5pm local time, police confirmed a 46-year-old father was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital where he later died. It’s believed he went into cardiac arrest as a result of multiple stab wounds.
An 18-year-old man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital and remains in a critical condition with a stab wound to his chest.
Another man, aged 29, was taken to Murwillumbah Hospital suffering minor injuries and he has since been released, according to police.
