A man has been charged with animal cruelty and refused bail after allegedly throwing a puppy against a wall and assaulting a man.

A man has been charged with animal cruelty and refused bail after allegedly throwing a puppy against a wall and assaulting a man.

At about 9am on Friday police were called to the scene of an alleged assault and act of animal cruelty at Raymond Terrace, 27km north of Newcastle.

When police arrived, they were told two men – aged 18 and 24 – were involved in an argument.

It is alleged the younger man attacked the older man and cause an injury to his eye.

The younger man also allegedly threw an eight-week old puppy against a wall.

The cattle x kelpie puppy, Dax, was taken to a local vet to treat his serious injuries – including a broken leg, which had to be amputated.

After an investigation, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrested an 18 year old man in Maitland, some 22km west of Raymond Terrace, at 7pm on Friday.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Court on Saturday, March 4.
