A SYDNEY man will appear in court next month after being charged over a road rage attack in front of shocked drivers.
The 44-year-old man allegedly used a shovel to smash the windscreen of a bus after he had verbally abused the driver. The incident happened in the inner-west suburb of Marrickville about 9.40am.
Some of the witnesses filmed the attack on their mobile phones and footage was shown last on 9 News. The driver could be seen yelling before allegedly taking a shovel from the back of his car and shattering the windscreen.
Witness Theo Tsambas, who filmed the incident, said he feared for his own life and the bus driver.
“The poor bus driver was really shaken and scared. Thank god he didn’t come out. I thought the guy was going to come out, saw that I was filming from across the road and come and kill me as well.”
Speaking on Today this morning, Michael Aird of the Transport Workers Union said state governments needed to better support bus drivers.
He said as many as a third of drivers had been assaulted while driving a bus, which was a “really serious situation”.
As many as 80 per cent of drivers had faced some sort of abuse. Mr Aird said there was support for drivers but more needed to be done.
“The state government has to do more to stand by its drivers.”
The man has been charged with destroy or damage property and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence. He was bailed to appear in court on March 3.
