Measles outbreak: If you're born in these years, you could be at risk

RESIDENTS who visited different parts of the city are being warned to check whether or not they have any measles symptoms after a second case of the disease was today confirmed.

The Gold Coast Public Health Unit was notified of a second case of measles within a week.

The person visited the following spots in the city: a skateboard park in Currumbin on September 24, a skateboard park in Runaway Bay on September 27, Dreamworld on September 29 and Westfield Helensvale Shopping Centre on September 30.

Those who visited these spots on these dates need to be alert for the symptoms of measles for the next three weeks.

It’s understood the person was exposed to measles in New Zealand, which currently has an outbreak of the disease.

Symptoms of measles include: fever, lethargy, a runny nose, moist cough and sore, red eyes.

A few days later a blotchy red rash will appear, often on the face, before it spreads to the rest of the body.

If you believe you have symptoms, call your GP and alert them before making an appointment.

Those who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to undertake immunisation. It is free for anyone born during or after 1966.

You are generally considered immune to measles if:

· You were born before 1966; or

· You have had two documented doses of a measles containing vaccine (such as MMR); or

· You have measles immunity proven on blood testing; or

· You have had laboratory-confirmed measles disease.
