A SYDNEY man has been charged with the attempted murder of his wife after an alleged hammer attack that left her fighting for life.

Robynne Fraley, 54, is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of Liverpool Hospital. She reportedly has had to have part of her skull removed by surgeons as they battled to save her from the severe head injuries.

The mother-of-four was found in her home in the western Sydney suburb of Cecil Hills about midday on Monday. She had allegedly been attacked with a hammer.

Her husband Robert Fraley has been charged with attempted murder and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm. Police launched a manhunt for Fraley after his wife was found clinging to life in the home.

He was located in his car nearby with self-inflicted injuries. It’s believed officers found a hammer in the vehicle.

The charges were laid at Green Valley Police station last night after he was released from hospital.

The 54-year-old was refused bail and will face the Liverpool Local Court later this morning.

The couple have four adult children. One neighbour told Channel Nine they were a “very good family”.

“I’m very shocked, very shocked,” the neighbour said.
