Will state borders be open by Christmas?

GREATER Geelong isn’t COVID-19 free yet with one active case remaining.

The city, that has recorded 366 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, has had one active case since Thursday.

The rest of the G21 area, that includes the Borough of Queenscliffe, and the Golden Plains, Surf Coast and Colac-Otway shires, is free of active COVID cases, according to Health department data.

No new cases were recorded in the G21 region on Saturday, and it has been more than two months since the G21 region had no active COVID-19 cases.

Premier Daniel Andrews has flagged some changes to social restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne will be announced on Sunday.

Regional Victoria is not due to take its next step in opening up until November 23 or until there has been no new cases statewide for a fortnight.

On Saturday 12 cases were recorded statewide. The two-week daily average to September 25 is 23.6 for metropolitan Melbourne and 0.8 for regional Victoria.

The first case of COVID-19 in Greater Geelong was recorded in early March when a Waurn Ponds shopping centre worker was diagnosed. At the time the young woman had recently returned from the United States.

Since then 538 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in the G21 region.

Active cases in the G21 region hit a peak on August 11 with 282. A fortnight later there were still 87 cases active in the G21 region.

Major COVID-19 outbreaks were recorded at: Opal South Valley aged care home where 31 residents, eight of whom died, and 21 staff contracted the virus since the first case was recorded in July; Colac’s Australian Lamb Company had 88 cases and Golden Farms poultry in Breakwater had more than 50 cases.

Multiple schools were closed during the second wave of the pandemic as staff and children were identified as close contacts of a person with the virus or had the virus themselves.
