A POLL showing a significant swing away from Labor in the marginal South Barwon electorate has been labelled “rubbish” by incumbent Darren Cheeseman.
The poll of about 600 people found a 5 per cent swing against Mr Cheeseman on primary vote in an electorate that was won by under 4500 votes in 2018.
On a two-party preferred basis the poll revealed the Liberal picked up 57.93 per cent compared to Labor’s 42.07 per cent, a drop of 12.53 per cent since the 2018 election.
Mr Cheeseman said the poll was designed to “prop up” the leadership of Victorian Liberal leader Michael O’Biren.
“I’ve never paid much attention to polls ever. I’m always focused on doing the right thing by the community,” he said.
“I think it’s a rubbish poll. It’s a very a small poll. It’s not reflective of the views of the community at all.”
The polling, completed by the Liberal Party leadership and obtained by News Corp, shows an average swing away from Labor of 14.35 per cent across the five seats on a two party-preferred basis.
In four of the five seats, including South Barwon, Liberal candidates would win on the primary vote, if the results carried to the next election, having polled more than 50 per cent in each.
Daniel Andrews was the preferred premier of the voters in South Barwon with 46 per cent supporting him compared to 37 per cent support for Mr O’Brien. Overall he was preferred premier by 1.42 per cent.

The MediaReach poll questioned 3000 people across Labor electorates of South Barwon, Bayswater, Hawthorn, Monbulk and Mount Waverley on Tuesday night.
The ALP’s average primary vote across the five seats dropped to 30.5 per cent, and if swings against Labor in the poll were replicated across the state at the next election, Labor would be plunged into opposition.
