‘No d***heads’: G-Flip wants WorldPride gig to be safe

Ahead of Sydney WorldPride, G-Flip has revealed how they felt when their hit Gay 4 Me was a hit with Aussies.

Sydney WorldPride prepares for over one million participants in upcoming celebrations

G-FLIP got scared as they listened to the Hottest 100 sitting on the couch at home with partner Chrishell Stause last month.

As the annual countdown reached the final 20 songs, the award-winning singer, drummer and big gig party starter feared their indie hit Gay 4 Me had missed the cut.

But they couldn’t be more wrong. In a powerful sign of the LGBTQIA+ takeover of global pop music, fans voted the gay anthem, which has more than 10 million streams, to No. 11.

“I couldn’t f…ing believe it. The lyrical content of that song is extremely queer and extremely gay. And for that to happen, in a public vote, which isn’t just a queer audience, it’s pretty incredible,” they said.

“It just really shows how times have changed and how much we’ve grown as a society. I just love all the queer content and music that’s out and about these days because back when I was growing up, you know, that was missing from the media.”

The festival favourite will be one of the headliners at the Sydney WorldPride closing concert Rainbow Republic on March 5.

G-Flip also today has been named in News Corp’s Pride 100 list, recognising newsmakers across Australia across the LGBTQIA+ community.

A master of the big gig with their extraordinary drum skills and effervescent stage presence, G Flip said they couldn’t wait to be embraced by the electrifying pulse of the WorldPride celebrations.

But they agreed there still needs to be more attention paid to creating safe spaces for all audiences at music gatherings.

“From my personal experience, I’ve only had a few like run ins with fans where maybe they’ve got a little bit too touchy and I’ve had friends who have crowd surfed and got groped,” they said.

“It’s not acceptable and people on stage, that’s a person who you are invading their space and disrespecting, and you’re meant to be a fan.

“I think doing a little housekeeping spiel, which I’ve done at my headlining shows, is really handy, because I have a lot of queer audience and I want to make sure everyone is safe.

“So I just say this is a no dickheads venue and get everyone to say hello to the person next to them and make this a beautiful, friendly environment.”
