Support for the Coalition has fallen to its lowest point in 40 years after Labor’s election win, even though approval for Anthony Albanese has waned at the start of his second term.
The first Newspoll conducted by The Australian since the May 3 election shows that primary vote support for both major parties has fallen to an historic low of 65 per cent.
With preferences accounted for, Labor has a lead of 57-43 per cent over the Coalition, which is the highest since August 2022, up 1.8 percentage point since the election.
Meanwhile, support for the Coalition has dipped below its lowest ever election primary vote of 31.8 per cent to 29 per cent - the worst recorded primary vote for the Liberal/Nationals parties since Newspoll’s inception in November 1985.
That’s an 11-point drop in the past eight months when the Albanese government was projected to potentially lose the election.
While the Prime Minister’s approval levels are up slightly from before the election, 47 per cent of voters are dissatisfied with his performance, giving him a net approval rating of zero.
By comparison, the first Newspoll conducted after the 2022 election saw Mr Albanese’s approval rating at 61 per cent.
Newly elected opposition leader Sussan Ley’s approval is at 35 per cent, which is two points lower than Peter Dutton’s approval rating at the same point in his leadership.
Disapproval of Ms Ley’s performance is at 42 per cent compared to Mr Dutton’s 41 per cent in the first Newspoll after the 2022 election.
As preferred prime minister Mr Albanese has a wide lead of 52-32 over Ms Ley, who is nevertheless ahead of Mr Dutton who stood at 25 per cent when he was new Liberal leader.
The collapse of core support for the Coalition has put support for the major parties to just 65 per cent, the lowest on record and continues a downward trend.
Some Coalition voters have defected to Labor while others have drifted over to Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, which gained 1.6 percentage points to 8 per cent.
The Greens, independents and minor parties have remained the same.
