A Far North man has died in Townsville Hospital after a crash on the Captain Cook Highway.

The 53-year-old motorcycle rider from Kewarra Beach was transferred to Townsville Hospital after initially being taken to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition on December 20.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating circumstances surrounding the two-vehicle crash that occurred about 4.40pm on the Captain Cook Highway, 100m north of the Holloways Beach roundabout.

Initial information suggests the black Suzuki GSX R1000 motorcycle collided with the rear of the vehicle in front before colliding with another vehicle and crashing into a road sign.

It is understood he suffered “significant neurological injuries”.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said a report would be prepared for the coroner, as in the event of any road fatality.
