A GOLD Coast man accused of showing a stranger his bag of guns and pulling out a Glock pistol after he was refused a cigarette has been granted bail.

A day earlier, Mick Danny Jones allegedly told a Dan Murphy’s cashier he had just broken up with his partner and had a bag of guns.

But Jones has claimed the guns were only gel blasters.

Magistrate Michelle Dooley granted Jones bail with strict conditions including he live in his Southport home, he stick to a curfew, abstain from alcohol, report to police every Monday and Friday and seek treatment for alcohol addiction within three days.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Dave Shelton told the court Jones was at the corner of Cavill Ave and Surfers Paradise Blvd about 9.45am on Saturday when he asked for a cigarette from a stranger.

“The male denied him and called him scum,” he said.

It was then Jones allegedly showed the man his duffle bag containing firearms.

Sen Const Shelton said Jones took out a “Glock pistol” and pulled back the slide.

Jones is also alleged to have been purchasing drinks at the Southport Dan Murphys about 5pm on Friday when he told the attendant he had just broken up with his partner and had a bag full of guns.

Sen Const Shelton said Jones returned the next day and the same attendant allegedly saw what she believed to be a firearm.

Defence lawyer Dave Carlin, of Legal Aid Queensland, said the arms in question were “gel blasters”.

“I submit that does put a fairly different complexion on the case rather than if they were actually firearms,” he said.

Sen Const Shelton told the court gel blasters are guns which fire a gel pellet and were “extremely realistic to the point where you cannot tell the difference unless you are holding them in your hand”.

Mr Carlin said Jones had tried to seek help for his alcohol problem early last week but had been unable to because the rehabilitation centre was closed due to the pandemic.

The matter was adjourned to July 13.
