A 28-year-old man is dead and another seriously injured after they were hit by a car while riding downhill inside a shopping trolley.
The tragedy happened about 12.20am on Coogee Bay Road in Randwick, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Both men were in the trolley but were thrown onto the road after colliding with the car at an intersection.
The trolley may have reached speeds of up to 80 kilometres an hour, Fairfax media quotes a senior policeman as saying.
One of them suffered major head trauma and died at the scene, while the other was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital with serious injuries.
It’s believed both men were from Sweden. One is thought to live in Sydney while the other recently arrived here on holiday.
The car’s 45-year-old driver wasn’t hurt but was also taken to hospital for routine blood alcohol testing.
