Longman ReachTEL poll exclusive: Voters turn backs on Labor’s Susan Lamb

THE citizenship saga threatens to put Bill Shorten’s Labor leadership under real threat, with the results of an exclusive ReachTEL poll for The Courier-Mail showing former Queensland MP Susan Lamb’s resignation will have huge knock-on effects.

WITH one month until the make-or-break Longman by-election, the LNP’s Trevor Ruthenberg has nosed out in front in the polls.

While the government has nothing to lose in the seat, a loss for Labor will bring Opposition Bill Shorten’s leadership under pressure.

Exclusive ReachTEL polling, of 814 Longman residents on June 26 conducted for The Courier-Mail, revealed Mr Ruthenberg has edged ahead 51-49 on a two-party-preferred basis.

But Labor’s Susan Lamb, who resigned from Parliament as part of the citizenship saga, has improved her primary vote from the 2016 election - rising from 35.3 per cent to 39 per cent.

Meanwhile, the LNP’s primary vote has fallen in the same time, dropping from 39 per cent to 35.5 per cent.

One of the key changes is a rise in support for One Nation, up to 14.7 per cent from 9.4 per cent in 2016.

While Ms Lamb’s primary support is up, it is not as high for Labor to be comfortable with the rise in One Nation’s vote.

One Nation preferences which favoured Labor in 2016 are now also expected to lean towards the LNP.
