SEVERAL limited edition coins telling the story of Australia’s involvement in World War I will be released over the next five years as part of centenary celebrations.

The Perth Mint unveiled the coin series today to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of Australia and Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on August 4, 1914.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett said the coins would honour the memories of our soldiers who went off to war.

Over the next five years, 18 themes will be released to mark milestones in Australia’s war history, including the country’s first action in New Guinea, Mr Barnett said.

“This commemorative coin series will honour the ANZACs, from the first Australian and New Zealand soldiers who came together at Gallipoli, to all the men and women who continue to serve the two countries,” Mr Barnett said.

The coins will be available from the Perth Mint as well as leading coin dealers and Australia Post stores.
